Name of game: Just dance 4

Release Date: October 2nd 2012 (Europe)

Institution behind game: Ubisoft

Print

There is a number of key conventions featured in this movie poster; It follows a bright multi-coloured colour scheme that connotes fun and gives you a party vibe; There is only one type of sans serif typeface; It includes an number of slogans around the title that is dominating most of the poster and is acting as a central image aswell.

Review 1: "Just Dance 4 doesn't bring much in the way of new featres to the party, but if all you want is to have one hell of a fun, energetic, and hilarious time, there really is no party quite like a Just Dance 4 party."

Review 2: "This is as fun a game as any in the series, with routines that are even wilder than before, and a keen self-awareness that eagerly embraces its over-the-top kitsch qualities. "

Review 3: "If there's anything bad to be said about Just Dance 4, it's that there's not much new here. It's largely a song pack, albeit a very entertaining one. "

The game has not been featured on the front of any magazine covers.

Broadcast

The advert for this game  is extremely effective and uses a number of key conventions that typical Wii television adverts would use. For example, during most of the advert, the setting is domestic and takes you on a journey through a house during a house party. The bright lighting of the modern looking home has synergy with the modern authentic colour scheme of wii (which is the main platform its available on) but also the party theme of the advert has synergy with the bright colours on the poster and front cover of the game. The track used for the advert is a feel good song hence the name, "good feeling" and the creators have used celebrity endorsement by having the singer of the song feature in the advert. The advert aslo features e-celebrities like D-trix, Lindsey Stomp and the Cimorelli sisters to promote the game.

Ubisoft also hosted a launch party where lots of different well known celebrites attended and spoke publicly about the game. The fact that there is a wide range of celebrities means that fanbases of the celebs would be aware of the game and know that the celebrity they aspire to be like plays the game and therefore they'd want to buy it too.

E-media

The website of the game attracts its TA as  which would consist of families and friends who are want to have fun and interact by coming together and playing the game as the colour scheme is bright and multi coloured, which would connote fun and enjoyment. The most interesting aspect of the website structure is how the background has been divided equally between both genders; there is a pink side with a cartoon of a young woman and a blue side with a cartoon of a young man. This may be ubisofts way of letting the audience know that the game is for anyone and it doesn't matter what your gender is.

The youtube channel has 25,022 subscriptions.

This user generated video is of a group of famous youtube gamers playing the game. This would promote it to their fanebase and anyone who is subscribed to them as by watching them playing and enjoying the game, they too may be inspired to do so.

The facebook page has over 6.7 million likes.

The twitter page has has over 53.7K followers and the famous hashtag used to promote the game was #JustDance4

1. Print

The main print advert used to promote Fifa 13 is the "get on board poster". This poster is successful in pursuing its target audience and promoting the game because it directly addresses the audience that by buying and playing the game, they are joining a whole new world. This is supported by the slogan "take the Fifa 14 world tour" and suggests that by buying the game, they will be going on a worldwide journey within the gaming world. This has synergy with the cover image as it shows world class player, Lionel Messi, giving them the key to the Fifa 14 van which will take them on their "journey". The van represents the actual Fifa game that gamers will be taking a journey. The advert includes many key conventions that advertisement posters would regularly use. The poster includes; slogans- "we are fifa 14", "get on board", "start your journey" etc; a central image (of Messi drectly adressing the audience to start their "journey"); a maximum of 2 typefaces throughout the whole thing and a colour scheme.

Review 1: Playstation magazine- "you rarely feel like you’re truly getting a new experience on first play." This review is negative and suggests that the game has nothing new to offer and is too similar to previous games.

Review 2: PLAY magazine- "FIFA 14 lets gamers develop their own brand of football and strives to ensure each virtual player holds his own value." This is a postive review and encourages readers to buy it by indirectly telling them that they are fully in control when playing the game and that the choices they have are limitless.

Review 3: XBOX magazine- "FIFA 14 oozes style, authenticity, and bold design from start to finish. It looks and feels better than ever." This review is positive and represents fifa in a whole new light, branding it as "better than ever". It tells and reassures the audience that serious changes have been made and the word "oozes" suggests that there is an overload of new features and has a lot to offer to the gamer.

Magazine reviews are effective in promoting the game because they influence people who want to buy the game based on what the people who have previously played the game say about it. In my opinion, i believe e-media is more effective than print because people are more likely to find out info online rather than buying magazines or stopping to look at posters.

2. Broadcast

The advert attracts the audience because a variety of different people have been incorporated into it. The video features world class footballers such as Messi, Bale and Chicharito. Also there are other celebrities such as drake featured on the cover. This would attract the audience as they would aspire to be like the players and celebrities and therefore want to play the game like them. Also there are people from a variety of different ethnicities which will attract the audience worldwide.
During the advert, world class player Lional

Messi is driving the van because he is the best player in the world, therefore he is the best way to advertise the game. This is because the majority of the target audience are teenage boys who aspire to be like messi and by having him as the "main attraction" on the advert, it encourages the them to buy it.

This advert features the fifa 14 brand in lots of different ways; The typeface used is the usual font fifa use in previous games and advertising campaigns. Also the company "EA sports" who are the creators of the game have been established. Also the players who are in the game itself are featured in the advert e.g Messi, Bale, & Chicharito.

The main reason that there is a combination of people is to tell people who watch is that the game is for everyone. Also it makes the advert international and attracts people from a variety of different races and ethnicities. The contrasting idea of footballers playing with normal people is effective and suggests that by buying the game you can interact with the virtual footballers in the game.

The fifa 14 trailer differs from the advert because the trailer gives you an insight of the game itself and shows you the graphics where as the advert is to promote the game and shows celebs and actors playing the game.

The trailer is effective in promoting the game because it gives gamers a real insight on the game itsself and lets them veiw the game from an actual gamers point of view. By watching the trailer, it lets gamers identify any updates or elements that have been added since the previous game.

E-media

The layout of the website is effective because it gives you different options to click on and shows screenshots of the game. Also as usual, Messi is featured on nearly all the images on the homepage which emphasises his importance through out the game.

Th facebook page has a whopping 21,345,778 likes

Their you tube page has 651,604 subscriptions and all their social networking accounts have been displayed in the to right corner.

The Inbetweeners movie trailer analysis

Representation & Media theory

I have chosen to analyse the Inbetweeners movie because the movie contains content which represents a group of teenage boys as sex addicts and reinforces the stereotypical view that people have on teenagers, which is that they are obsessed with pursuing the opposite sex. For example, in the trailer Simon and the girl of his dreams, Carly are kissing and she suddenly stops and tells him that they need to talk. Consequently his reaction to this is disappointment as he says "No, not talking!" This is a highly stereotypical view on boys and indicates that they'd rather have intercourse than "talk". Another way teenage boys have been represented is that they are intrigued by females cleavage. The trailer shows a teaser of when the boys are on a night out and every time a girl walks past, all four of the boys follow their cleavage with their eyes to the point where they have to turn around. They are obviously overwhelmed and sexually "turned on" by all the flesh and cleavage on show. Another stereotypical view that is reinforced in the movie is that females are seen as sex objects to men. This is evident throughout the whole movie as all four of the boys go on holiday mainly to have sex. The whole movie features the boys trying to impress or wanting be noticed by girls. Their attempts are usually unsuccessful and this is very comic but also causes viewers to cringe as the situations are very common to teenagers of today. For example, in the trailer there is a part where Jay gets slapped a girl who he touches. His aim was to impress her and to show her sexual affection however she finds it really weird and therefore slaps him across the face. That reinforces the typical view on teenage boys as sex addicts.

Todorov- Equilibrium:
The inbetweeners movie does apply to Todrov's media theory which is that a narrative follows a structure that is separated into three parts: the equilibrium, the disequilibrium and a new equilibrium. At the beginning of the film there is calmness as a group of 4 friends have just finished school and they decide to go on a "lads holiday" to celebrate. On the first night of the holiday they meet a group of four girls who are also from London and each of the boys "pair up" with one of the girls. They are having fun until they meet one of the boys (Simon's) ex girlfriend, Carly. Carly causes the group to get into a big argument and they split into 2 (Will & Simon, Jay & Neil). Simon still has feelings for Carly and this effects his relationship with his friends, the new girl he meets and Carly's new boyfriend. That is the disequilibrium. Later on in the movie the boys become friends again and after humiliating Simon, Carly is soon out of the picture and the four boys end up dating the girls they meet, including Simon who takes a massive risk to win his new lover over. The ending is a state of new equilibrium, as peace is restored. The boys are friends again and they all have new girlfriends.

Propp- Character:
The inbetweeners movie does not exactly correspond with Propp's theory as there is only a certain amount of character types included in the movie.
Protagonists- Will, Simon, Jay & Neil
Antagonist- Carly along with her new boyfriend
Heroine- The four girls they meet on holiday
Mentor- Will (he often leads the group into making the right decisions)

Barthe- Enigma & Action codes:
Enigma codes:
(Questions that viewers of the series would ask)
Will they boys finally loose their virginity on holiday?
Will Simon win over Carly?
What happens at the run-down hotel?
Why does Jay scream whilst he's in the toilet?
Do they win over the girls they dance in front of?
Action codes:
"I better not get stuck with the fat one" -We know hes going to get the fat one & they eventually fall in love.
"Simon, we need to talk" -We automatically know she is going to dump him
"This don't look like the pictures" -Automatically know they've been conned & hotel is going to be really rubbish

Film poster & trailer analysis

Hey blogger!

For this weeks task we have been asked to do an analysis on a poster and trailer and seeing as Christmas is on its way, i have decided to go for a very festive movie "Elf".

Here is the trailer:

Genre:
Adventure/Festive

Narrative/Plot:
As a baby, Buddy was looked after by an orphanage. However on Christmas he was accidentally stowed away into santas sack and ended up in the north pole where he then grew up. 30 years on, hes an adult human still living in the north pole, thinking he one of santas elves.  However he gets informed by the elves that he is a human and Santa allows him to return to his birthplace, New York so he can seek who he really is and find his birth farther, Walter Hobbs. Walter didn't have a clue that buddy was born so when he turned up on his door step, he was overwhelmed but not pleased. Meanwhile, Buddy experiences the delights and joys of the human culture and new york city as it was all new to him. When Buddys and walters relationship as farther and son escalates and interferes with his Job, Walter is forced to rethink about what matters to him most. His son or his job?

Characters:
Buddy, Walter Hobbs, elves, Santa, etc

Iconography:
In the film trailer you see that a repetior of elements and typical iconography has been shown. Firstly, you see that in the trailer it is snowing, it starts off in the elves workshop at the north pole and Santa and the elves are featured. Then when Buddy arrives in new york, you notice that the city has been covered in christmas decorations and there is alot of christmas cheer and spirit. Also, may i add, that New York is quite a typical city for a Christmas movie to be set in as most are based there.

Setting:
It is obviously set during the christmas season of december and its time period is typically the modern day noughties. Also as i said above, it is first set at the north pole for the beginning of the trailer & movie then its soon based in the city of new york.

How are images used to attract the audience?
In this movie poster, you see that the letter "L" in the word "elf" has been replaced by an image of a man dressed as a elf. This is significant and very clever of the creators as it suggests that the rather tall and odd looking man dressed in a festive elf costume, may be claiming to be an elf when clearly he looks nothing like what people sterotypically believe and elf looks like. Also, the rather tall looking "elf" suggests to the audience that there may be something wrong with the him as elves are usually extremely short, however because this elf is tall, the audience would imply that this man is unusual and it would make them want to watch the film to find out more. Finally, this idea of incorporating the image of the protagonist and the title works well because the colours and patterns on the costume are very similar to the colour and pattern of the letters.

How are words used to give the audience info about the film?
The tagline/slogan is "This holiday, discover your inner elf". Again, this has been cleverly put together by the creators as it uses a famous phrase, "discover you inner self" but instead the word "self" has been replaced by the word "elf" so it fits with the festive Christmas theme. It could suggest to the audience that the film is all about the elf finding out who he really is and it implies that he may want to stop hiding under a costume and show his true colours and self. Also the main actors names have been placed at the bottom so the audience will recognize the names and are more likely to watch the film.

Iconography that tells you the genre:
-The colours green and red are festive colours
-The actor is wearing an elf costume
-The serif font looks old and festive
